The Raines Law Room at The William

The Raines Law Room at The William

24 East 39th St

It’s accessed through a basement bar called The Shakespeare. From there you’ll be escorted by the host through a door marked “No Admittance,” and will be led up the staircase to the parlor floor.

The Raines Law Room owes its name to Raines law of 1896, authored by John Raines. This obscure law was designed to curtail the alcoholic consumption of working men who were in habit of spending all day Sunday drinking in saloons.
